Kauai’s Yoga Scene

The Garden Island has become a prime destination for those who are choosing Kauai  to re-establish their Mind, Body, and Spirit connections.  On the vanguard of that experience is the practice of Hatha yoga.

Hatha Yoga (the ‘physical’ branch) of the broader philosophical perspective has ‘become a multi million dollar industry in its current reincarnation.    Its popularity has been embraced on the Garden Island in many forms and styles.

If hatha yoga is “your bag” here are just a few of the locations  island wide that just might fit your yogic bill.

Hanalei Yoga

Starting in the north end of Kauai is one of the ‘oldest’ studios; Yoga Hanalei. Founded in 1997 by Bhavani Maki, Yoga Hanalei offers a full range of classes in the Ashtanga and vinyasa  forms of  hatha Yoga and is located in the Hanalei Town Center on the second floor of the Redwood Building.

Princeville Yoga

One of the newest studios on the north shore is Princeville Yoga. Princeville Yoga is a Bikram yoga studio located just above Lapperts ice cream parlor in the Princeville Center. The studio posts a daily morning schedule with 2 afternoon classes. .

Moving down the coast Michelle Edwards and Mana Yoga offers classes in founder Edwards’ own developed YogAlign method of Hatha yoga.   The location in the Princeville area promotes a teacher training as well as weekly classes and even a surfing and yoga 7 day adventure retreat.

Kilauea Yoga

The Ashtanga yoga practice (Mysore style) finds it’s way daily at 7:30-9:30 a.m every morning (except Sundays) to the the Parish House in Kilauea under the auspice of ‘Eagle” and Pineapple yoga .

Kapaa Yoga

Bikram Yoga finds another home in Kapaa at The Yoga House. While primarily a ‘Bikram house’ the Yoga House has also opened their mats to a more extensive menu with their Yoga Co-op; offering flow styles (hot and room temp) as well as a twice a week acupuncture clinic

The southern climbs of Kauai  at Koloa town’s Hong wan Ji is ably manned by Paul Reynolds and Le Guru is You!-Hatha Yoga in the Vinyasa tradition.  Paul is known as the “Travelin’ yogi” as he also teaches beachfront Yoga at the beautiful Waimea Plantation Cottages in Waimea as well as the Hyatt Anara Spa.

Kalaheo Yoga

The  Kalaheo Yoga Studio is the islands Iyengar yoga  ‘outlet’ but also provides a seven days a week schedule  in Vinyasa, Integral, restorative and even Tai Chi Chuan.
